Award-winning expressionistic painter Helen Cantrell was born in Chicago, Illinois, Cantrell has spent much of the past 50 years living along the Northeast coast painting landscapes and suburban scenes and the people who live there. Her inspiration to make art came at the early age of 13 years-old when she came across an article about Richard Diebenkorn and the Bay Area Figurative Art painters. Her work reflects these influences by featuring a mix of abstraction and figuration, with vibrant bright hues, visible brushwork, and a sense of calm.
A resident of Old Lyme, CT., Cantrell spent the last 20 years creating her landscape paintings in an expressionist gestural style. From group shows to one-person exhibitions, Cantrell has shown her work extensively in the New England area. Her work is housed in collections at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking, Pfizer, Inc., New York Public Library, School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Slater Museum in Norwich, CT.
