Helen Cantrell, "A Sense of Place"

                            May 24, 2019 -                           July 28th, 2019

EXTENDED: August 18th, 2019

Award-winning expressionistic painter Helen Cantrell opens the summer season at The White Gallery with her show "A Sense of Place."  Opening artists' reception on Friday, May 24 from 5 – 8 pm.

"We are excited to bring the expressive modernist landscapes of Helen Cantrell to our gallery," said Tino Galluzzo, director of The White Gallery. “I like to paint landscapes,” says Helen Cantrell, “urban, suburban, and shoreline in an expressionist gestural style.”

Born in Chicago, Illinois, Cantrell has spent much of the past 50 years living along the Northeast coast painting landscapes and suburban scenes and the people who live there.  Her inspiration to make art came at the early age of 13 years-old when she came across an article about Richard Diebenkorn and the Bay Area Figurative Art painters.  Her work reflects these influences by featuring a mix of abstraction and figuration,  with vibrant bright hues, visible brushwork, and a sense of calm.

David Dunlop: "The World Around Us"

September 29th, 2018 - November 11th, 2018

A perennial favorite, David Dunlop returns to The White Gallery with paintings featuring "The World Around Us." Landscape artist David Dunlop has been called a "modern-day old master," and with good reason. His paintings transcend the ephemeral and often temperamental nature of the contemporary art world; David says of his work, "I think the idea is not to startle but to offer insight, which is far more elusive and difficult. Works of art that startle are transitory. The most effective painting doesn't prejudice people toward certain results, it lets people do their own thinking and project their own imagination into the painting."
An opportunity to meet the artist and enjoy refreshments in beautiful Lakeville.

Art of the Print and Works on Paper

July 20, 2018 - September 9th

An opportunity to see the works of fifteen noted and talented artists. These artists, most from Connecticut, share a commonality in that this work gives us a view of their creative process in its simple technique and form.  Not that the work is simple.  It all starts with drawing and these artists know how to draw and translate to whatever medium they are using. Whether etchings, drawings, lithograph or mixed media, it all is finished on paper.

Artists' Talk: David Dunlop

October 14, 2017

The Science of Expression: Art and Design

What subconscious processes are in play when we look at art, when we make art, when we decide to acquire art? How does our biology direct our making and perception of art? How do culture and biology determine art? How have they done this across time and place? How have our ideas and purposes for art changed with culture, science and technology?

Join us on Saturday, October 14th at 12PM as David Dunlop unpacks these questions and many more.
