Berkshire Living - "in the galleries"

Art Smart
FOR THE GALLERY-SHY, art-curious, or just plain intrigued, the White Gallery in Lakeville, Connecticut, has a plan for detangling the mysteries of art and opening doors to new experiences for locals and visitors alike. Starting in January, the gallery is offering a series of seminars on various art topics--a precursors to its new summer program, "Wednesdays at the White." Though the gallery showcases landscapes, contemporary abstracts, and sculpture, these seminars are not meant to teach art but will explore diverse topics such as valuation, the auction system, technical aspects of photographs, histories of artists and their work, and the differences between museums and galleries.

Gallery owners Tino and Susan Galluzzo emphasize that the seminars are not meant to be how-tos, but educational journeys into various aspects of the art world.

He is a showman, this painter. A teacher. An entertainer. Art's Bernstein.

Dunlop, whose painting are on exhibit at The White Gallery, came to Lakeville, Saturday, in slacks, a sweater, and a bowler hat to tell the packed house about the high Renaissance and about Leonardo da Vinci, Dunlop's hero--his 15th-century hero, that is (he has plenty more, from the cave painters at Lascaux to Turner and O'Keeffe.)

That 's because Leonardo broke new ground in a landscape dominated by tradition, Dunlop tells us.

Local artists imaginative sculptures on exhibit
By: Darryl Gangloff

Pine Plains resident and sculpture Lyndon Preston has recently moved into the realm of mixed media by using glass, nails, wire and acid on copper to create beautiful works of art that are currently being shown in an exhibit at the White Gallery in Lakeville, Conn.

Preston's work which will be shown at the gallery until Oct. 3, demonstrates that something common and crude like a rust nail or a piece of copper, can become an exquisite piece of art that is completely open to the interpretation of the viewer.

COMPASS - "A Painter, At Last"
By: Judith Linscott

Susan Rand always wanted to paint. But despite a self-professed "strong visual awareness," she thought she could not draw. "I thought you had to be born with it," she said during a recent interview at her Salisbury studio.

So when Rand attended Goddard College, she studied sculpting and print making. Eventually she moved to the Northwest Corner and had children, she specialized in portrait photography. She was very good at it; her pictures were quirky and expressive, not the usual sweet fare. But she knew she wanted more.
